Still chasing sleep?

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

I just wanted to continue the sleep discussion I started in my previous blog, last week. We know that sleep is something that is really important to a lot of people, me being no exception, and something we can struggle with.

You're not alone:

  • Approximately 21 million or around 1 in 3 people in the UK suffer from insomnia and sleep deprivation. That’s a massive chunk of the UK population struggling to sleep. Sadly, just 6% (4 million) UK residents catch the recommended 8 hours. Well over half of people asked say that they aren’t content with their sleep and report poor sleep quality.

So I've carried out some research and delved a little deeper into the techniques we can adopt to work on better sleep.

1. Stick to a sleep schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up at a consistent time every day, even on weekends.

2. Create a relaxing sleep environment: Make your bedroom comfortable, quiet, and cool. Use blackout curtains to keep the room dark and turn off electronic devices that emit blue light.

3. Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake: Avoid consuming caffeine and alcohol at least a few hours before bedtime since they can disrupt sleep patterns.

4. Exercise regularly: Regular exercise has been proven to improve sleep quality, but it's important to avoid working out too close to bedtime.

5. Practice relaxation techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, which leads to better sleep.

6. Avoid eating heavy meals and drinking too much fluid before bedtime.

7. A lot of the research I did suggested that CBD oil can benefit your sleep too. Click on the image below.

These specially formulated drops can help your body unwind properly and contribute to that good night's sleep.

It also contains natural substances (valarian root or extract) that has over a 100 different compounds which studies have shown to calm nerves and assist people in falling to sleep (Yey!). Used this since the 1800s, it's one of the oldest known, natural sleep remedies.

Remember, sleep plays a crucial role in cognitive function, memory retention, and emotional regulation. It allows the brain to consolidate information, process and store memories, and manage emotions. Without proper sleep, your attention span, problem-solving ability, creativity, and decision-making skills can all be negatively affected.

Good luck and sleep well.
